Transfer your Google Cloud projects to Crayon
Transferring your Google Cloud projects to Crayon consists of these 3 simple steps:
- Crayon provisions a new Google Cloud billing account in your Organization
- Crayon grants your user admin permissions on the new billing account
- You link your existing Google Cloud projects to the new billing account
To link your projects to your new, Crayon supplied billing account, you can follow the guide below.
To ensure everything goes as smoothly as possible, please read Before you make the switch first.
This is especially important if you have made Google Cloud Marketplace purchases with your project.
Required permissions
The following predefined Google Cloud IAM roles grant the required permissions in order to unlink your project from the old billing account, and link your project to your new Crayon billing account.
On the project:
- Project Billing Manager
- Project Viewer or Project Owner
On the old and new billing account:
- Billing Account User
- Billing Account Viewer or Billing Account Administrator
Link your projects to the new billing account
In the Google Cloud Console, logged in with a user with the permissions described above, do the following:
- Navigate to Billing->My Projects
- In the Main Menu, select Billing
- On the Billing page, select the My Projects tab
- From the list of projects, open the Actions menu of the project you want to link to your new billing account
- Select Change billing
- In the pop-up window, choose your Crayon provisioned billing account
- Click on Set account to finalize the change
If you have more than one project, remember to repeat the steps above for each.
Before you make the switch
While switching a project to a different Google Cloud billing account should not result in any service interruption or server downtime, there are a couple of things to consider before making the switch.
Google Cloud Marketplace customers
If you have made purchases from Google Cloud Marketplace in your project, ensure you re-purchase these items in your new Google Cloud billing account before making the switch. This will prevent your project from being disabled or losing data as a result of missing required resources.
Historical billing data
When you change the billing account on your projects, the billing history of the old billing account will not be transferred to the new billing account. It will, however, still exist in the old billing account.
When do I start getting billed to the new account?
Charges incurred on your project prior to switching the billing account of the project will be billed to your old billing account.
Charges incurred after the switch will be billed to your Crayon supplied billing account.
